Developmental lignification and seasonal variation in - glucosidase and peroxidase activities in xylem of Scots pine , Norway spruce and silver

چکیده
We examined the relationship between β-glucosi-dase and peroxidase activities and xylem lignification in the stems of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) during the 1999 growing season. Examination of stem cross sections stained with safranin and Alcian blue for lignin and cellulose, respectively, indicated that radial growth of pine and spruce xy-lem began in late May, whereas the growth of birch xylem was initiated 2 weeks later. Lignification began soon after thickening of the newly formed cell walls, i.e., upon deposition of cellulose. Hydrolysis of the synthetic β-glucosidase substrate p-nitrophenyl-β-O-D-glucopyranoside was correlated with radial growth and lignification in the xylem of both conifers, but the relationship between lignification and the hydrolysis of coni-ferin by β-glucosidase was not obvious. β-Glucosidase activities in the xylem of silver birch were low and did not correlate with growth or lignification with either substrate. An increase in peroxidase activity was detected at the initiation of growth and lignification in the conifers and during growth and lignifi-cation in silver birch, but high peroxidase activities were also measured outside the growth period during late autumn, winter and early spring.

Fine root morphological adaptations in Scots pine, Norway spruce and silver birch along a latitudinal gradient in boreal forests.
Variability in short root morphology of the three main tree species of Europe's boreal forest (Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and silver birch (Betula pendula Roth)) was investigated in four stands along a latitudinal gradient from northern Finland to southern Estonia. Silver birch and Scots pine were present in three stands and Norway spruce was present...

ODC 164.5: 161(485j[-174.7 Pinus sylvestris + 174.7 Picea abies] The influence of growing conditions upon the pignzentation in needles from xeedlings o f Scots pine and Norway spruce has been studied. The plant material was grown either in the open or in plastic greenhouses. The greenhouses were covered with plastic during the vegetation periods from May to August, and during the rest of the ye...
متن کاملrelationships between needle nutrient composition in scots pine and norway spruce stands and the respective concentrations in the organic layer and in percolation water
We explored how N, S, P, Ca, K, Mg, Zn and Mn concentrations in percolation water (PW) and organic layer (OL) are reflected in the respective element concentrations in Scots pine and Norway spruce current needles. For both tree species, N and Ca had the highest covariation (Radj 2 ≥ 0.73) between nutrient concentrations in the OL and in the needles. Mean N, S, P, K, Zn and Mn concentrations in ...
متن کاملAnatomical-based defense responses of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) stems to two fungal pathogens.
We investigated the cellular responses of stem tissues of mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees to inoculations with two fungal pathogens. The bark beetle vectored fungus, Leptographium wingfieldii Morelet, induced longer lesions in the bark, stronger swelling of polyphenolic parenchyma cells, more polyphenol accumulation and increased ray parenchyma activity compared with the root rot ...
متن کاملEvidence that longer needle retention of spruce and pine populations at high elevations and high latitudes is largely a phenotypic response.
There is abundant evidence that evergreen conifers living at high elevations or at high latitudes have longer-lived needles than trees of the same species living elsewhere. This pattern is likely caused by the influence of low temperature in combination with related factors such as a short growing season and low nutrient availability. Because it is not known to what degree such patterns result ...
